Synopsis

Government Inspector revolves around a case of mistaken identity in a small Russian town. When the town's corrupt officials learn that an incognito government inspector is coming to investigate them, they panic and mistakenly identify a lowly civil servant named Khlestakov, as the inspector. Realizing their mistake, Khlestakov seizes the opportunity to accept bribes and revel in the town’s hospitality. Desperate to hide their corruption, the officials go to absurd lengths to please him. Government Inspector is a brilliant critique of bureaucracy and corruption, filled with humour and sharp social commentary.

A Word From Our Director

In the preface to Nikolai Gogol’s Collected Tales, translator Richard Pevear writes:

Gogol saw the fiction of ranks, not as evil to be exposed, but as an instance of the groundlessness of reality itself, and of the incantatory power of words.

This has guided us as we cracked open Harrower’s adaptation of The Government Inspector. The setting is a small provincial town in Gogol's own Ukraine, which was under Russian rule in 1836. An echo to the continued Russian expansion and colonization in the region, the play richly satirizes corruption and hypocrisy using provincial characters who uphold rank while trying to climb the social ladder. Through the device of mistaken identity, Gogol also shines a bright light on the inhumane conditions of the serf and peasant/shopkeeper class of his time. His weapon against oppressive force is words and he fires in all directions with an absurd, satirical farce that blows raspberries in the face of the motherland.

It has been an immense pleasure building this world with an exceptional graduating class of artists. In the words of Chekhov:

We have worked mindfully, cheerfully, tirelessly, unanimously.

Thank you for joining us!
