Training

The Production Design and Technical Arts Program trains students in Production Management, Technical Direction, Stage Management, Stage Electrics/Lighting Design, Sound Systems/Sound Design, and Video Systems/Projection Design. Students learn their craft from seasoned professionals in a stimulating environment, complete with up-to-date technology and professional equipment. Core elements include working with the design teams, dialoguing with directors, finding innovative solutions, excelling in technical and management skills, and creating a rigorous and collaborative working environment.

Fill out the online application form and pay the registration fee before January 31

You must be at least 18 years old as of December 31 of the year of entry at NTS. Successful candidates will have post-secondary theatre training or equivalent experience and English language proficiency.

INTERVIEW

Each candidate is contacted for an interview (in person or via video conference). The program director herself will meet you.

PROJECT

Following the interview, all candidates are required to write a production concept for the mounting of a play chosen by the School. Candidates have one month after the interview to prepare this test.

Applicants will be notified of the result of their application in May. 

An average of 20 student shows are created each year.

Curriculum

NTS offers highly individualized training. As such, the curriculum is subject to change, following the latest development in technology, new artistic practices, and the needs of the unique group of artists making up each class. Our training is always practical, supported by the 20 student shows created each year.

Production Design and Technical Arts students currently work with the following software:

  • CAD: Vectorworks, AutoCAD
  • VIDEO: Isadora, QLab, Adobe CS6, Logic Pro, Resolume Arena 
  • SOUND: QLab,Protools, Modul 8, Ableton Live
  • LIGHTING: Lightwright

Instructors

Our students are taught and mentored by working professional artists who have their finger on the pulse of the artistic community.

They share a wealth of theatre experience from across Canada and around the world. NTS has an overall ratio of two instructors per student. Our group of teaching artists varies each year according to student needs.

Andrea Lundy - Director of the Production Design & Technical Arts Program

Andrea Lundy has been a production manager and lighting designer for the past 36 years across Canada and internationally. As a lighting designer, she received 9 Dora Mavor Moore Awards and 2 META Awards and has been nominated 26 times for outstanding design. As a production manager, she was active in the Toronto theatre scene and across the country for 30 years. Andrea sits on the Board of Directors for SMarts (Stage Managing the Arts) and CITT/ICTS (Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology).
