The National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) is seeking a Human Resources Advisor who is passionate about relationship dynamics and interested in arts and culture, and who can ensure the smooth implementation of principal tasks related to human resources management.

The chosen candidate will be an excellent communicator and listener who is able to establish lasting relationships, while playing an important role facilitating ongoing and future changes at this exiting time of transformation. The challenges of the position

NTS is a private school with a non-profit status. It provides high-quality instruction to the 170 students in its intense and rigorous professional programs, while also opening its doors for the good of all by offering continuing education, artistic residencies, and public workshops. The School develops and initiates many activities to support its existing training programs and to connect with thousands of artists and audiences of all ages from coast to coast. By 2020, the School will impact over 10,000 theatre lovers every year.

In this context, we are looking for a person who is eager to get involved in HR management on behalf of our sixty permanent employees, over 300 contract teachers and instructors, and numerous freelancers.

  • Assist the DG in implementing institutional reorganization during this period of change;
  • Participate in ongoing changes and get involved in implementing innovative processes;
  • Contribute to maintaining frank and open exchanges to promote cohesion and efficient work;
  • Actively participate as part of the team, for an inclusive and caring professional milieu;
  • Share the idea that theatre brings people together and allows them to imagine, think, and feel collectively.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the director of organizational development, the chosen candidate will ensure the smooth implementation and running of HR activities, and will uphold the value of HR within NTS.

The priorities will include division of work and support for managers (training and coaching) in relation to the reorganization currently underway; implementation of an effective communication process; recruitment and employer brand management; development of HRIS as well as employee manual and policies (including pay-related issues) that reflect NTS’s mission and values.

In this capacity, he or she will:

  • Identify and propose strategic HR initiatives related to institutional priorities;

  • Take the lead on recruitment and work on employer brand management;

  • Develop and promote policies and procedures related to diversity and inclusion;

  • Foster a well-being committee and participate in improving the working environment;

  • Initiate the process of revising employment contracts for both permanent and contract staff;

  • Support managers in constructive staff evaluation and improve their understanding of effective and humane management styles;

  • Support managers in following applicable laws and policies;

  • Begin the process of revising evaluation forms; encourage performance evaluation interviews;

  • Steer a committee for drafting or rewriting the employee manual and HR policies;

  • Develop and promote communication systems for HR issues;

  • Assist managers in complex management situations;

  • Assist managers with disciplinary action as required; in problematic cases, engage an outside resource (lawyer);

  • Coordinate the onboarding of new employees and facilitate their integration;

  • Coordinate training as needed;

  • Identify and propose a pay policy (with support from an outside resource) and ensure pay equity;

  • Ensure Health and Safety issues are respected, and participate in the health and safety committee;

  • Oversee group insurance and pension plans;

  • Act as a point of contact for various questions related to sexual harassment and violence;

  • With the help of the dashboard, prepare and analyse statistics (employee turnover, hiring, sick leaves, etc.);

  • Work towards continually improving HR services;

  • Other related tasks as appropriate to the position.

 

 

 

Required profile

  • CHRP designation as well as a university degree in HR, industrial relations, or administration;

  • Proven experience in a similar position, with demonstrated success;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills in both English and French;

  • A demonstrated sense of ethics and of professional responsibility;

  • An ability to juggle priorities and meet deadlines;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, sense of initiative, problem solving, judgement, creativity, rigour, diplomacy, independence, integrity, resourcefulness, leadership, analytic ability, and stress management;

  • Familiarity with the art/educational context, an asset.
