Reporting Directly to the Director of Development (DOD), the Associate Director of Development fulfills objectives related to public and private financing activities. The incumbent is responsible for researching, writing, and reporting on various agreed upon strategies related to public revenues (grants), charitable donation proposals, and corporate sponsorship agreements for the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS).

The successful candidate will work closely with the Artistic Program Directors, Director of Organizational Development, and the Communications and Marketing Department to gather relevant data needed to complete their tasks and fulfill the vision of the CEO. They will manage a portfolio of relationships primarily with public funders but also other donors/sponsors, as required, to ensure that the department goals and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are met. They will represent NTS at various meetings, events and assume any other responsibilities or tasks compatible with the purposes of the position.

Responsibilities

Public Funding

  • Continually seek and identify new grant opportunities while developing and implementing effective plans and work processes to increase the availability of grants from local, provincial, national, and international funding sources that best align with NTS strategic priorities;
  • Ensure the development, drafting, and implementation of strategies in line with the NTS brand to ensure that funds are obtained and maintained in compliance with the provisions and grant agreements of each government agency;
  • Ensure that the staff provides dynamic and courteous customer service;
  • Monitor and inform NTS of developments, appointments, and other changes at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels that have an impact on the School’s activities and issues;
  • Collaborate with program directors to identify opportunities for alliances and partnerships that can help position or develop NTS, ensuring that grants obtained are allocated appropriately and funds are spent on time;
  • Manage a detailed grant schedule that includes all timelines and key milestones, such as, proposal due dates, the building of effective collection systems, reports, follow-ups, etc.

Private Funding

  • Support the DOD in developing and implementing a medium- and long-term private financing strategy;
  • Conduct thorough and effective research on potential donors/sponsors and prepare briefing notes;
  • Carry out the necessary follow-ups to ensure compliance with donor/sponsor agreements;
  • Write content and coordinate the production of information for donors (texts for web pages, Thank-You letters, calls for donations, brochures) and ensure that the work is revised and correctly translated through our internal language service;
  • Participate in events involving alumni and donor constituents;
  • Provide support to the Administrative Assistant, as needed.

Relationship (internal and external)

  • Prepare briefing notes and/or meet to establish strong ties with program officers and other key contacts in order to fully understand the eligibility criteria and deadlines for submitting future grant opportunities;
  • Coordinate the implementation of a government relations plan (objectives, strategies, actions, resources, timelines, and deliverables) as per the strategic communications plans formulated by the DOD, the Communications and Marketing Department, external consultants, and/or other partners;
  • Participate in internal and external meetings, working groups, or committees, and follow up on assigned activities;
  • Liaise with the Chief Financial Officer to update and send cash flow statements and other budget documents;
  • Share successes, challenges, and experiences with key internal and external stakeholders in a productive manner.
Profile
  • University degree and two to three years experience in managing public and private funding files in a similar position, with proof of success;
  • Excellent command of French and English with exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple projects, diverse requirements, and changing priorities;
  • Understanding of and proven ability to work with philanthropic stakeholders;
  • Ability to conduct research, collect, data and analyze information;
  • Ability to produce simple financial reports, qualitatively and quantitatively analyze data, and synthesize results;
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and demonstrate sound judgment, rigour, diplomacy, tenacity, autonomy, integrity, resourcefulness, a sense of humour, and good stress management;
  • Knowledge of DonorPerfect and Smartsheet, or similar software;
  • Ability to quickly master the use of new software; proficient in Word and Excel;

This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, with occasional requirements outside of office hours.
