Class Description
Celebrate the joy of musical theatre in this 10-week course for early-career and developing performers with a solid foundation in musical theatre. Using scenes and songs from a range of contemporary and pre-contemporary musicals, students explore vocal technique, movement, text analysis, and character work through a practical hands-on approach.
Together, we look at how music and movement shape storytelling, emotional life, and performance style across different forms of musical theatre.
What students will do:
- Develop our understanding of music theory and vocal technique, and identify our range as singers
- Explore a range of musical theatre styles and approaches focused in the contemporary age Learn choreography and movement-based storytelling for different styles of theatre
- Develop our performance skills through working on a solo song
- Strengthen text analysis and character exploration through improvisation and ensemble work
This class is energetic, collaborative, and accessible. It is designed for performers looking to challenge themselves, deepen their artistry, and continue growing their relationship to musical theatre.
Artist-facilitator: Debora Friedmann
Debora Friedmann is an educator, director, and choreographer based in Montreal, with over a decade of experience in the performing arts. As the founder and Artistic Director of Contact Theatre, she has led the company in producing bold, reimagined musical theatre productions since 2018. They recently produced Falsettos (2026), Cabaret (2025), and Spring Awakening (2024), which earned three META Awards, including Outstanding Independent Production.
Debora’s work with Contact Theatre is known for its emotional depth, inclusivity, and innovative approach, earning her multiple personal nominations at the Montreal English Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Direction (2024), Outstanding Contribution to Theatre – Choreography (2023), and Outstanding Emerging Production Artist-Director (2022).
In addition to her work at Contact Theatre, Debora contributes to Montreal’s theatre scene with productions at the Segal Centre for the Performing Arts, including Forever Young: A Camp Comedy (2025) and Y2K: A Workplace Cabaret (2023).
She is deeply committed to arts education. She teaches with Geordie Theatre School and runs a musical theatre program at a Montreal high school, helping to shape the next generation of performers. With a philosophy rooted in radical kindness and respect for diverse voices and opinions, Debora aims to create spaces where every artist can thrive. She continues to challenge herself and her collaborators to create theatre that not only entertains but sparks reflection and change.
