Description du cours

*Ce cours est offert en anglais seulement.

For millennia, we have not just told each other stories, but sprung to our feet and performed them. The art and craft of theatrical adaptation is as old as humankind. It is one of the ways we transmit, celebrate, refresh, reframe and challenge the narratives and myths around which our communities are built.

What distinguishes the dramatic form from other storytelling forms? Adapting for the stage gets us thinking about what a play is; what a play does.  In this course, you will be weighing the building blocks and pertinent features of your original document against the dramaturgical requirements of its new shape.

This course invites you to unlock and explore the theatrical possibilities of a work not originally intended for the stage — a novel, short story, poem, essay, song, etc.  If your source material is already a play, then you will be examining and extending its theatrical potential — a play to musical, for example. Whatever your angle, it is welcome!

Each class will be built around group discussion, exercises, reading and feedback. Student-generated writing as well as curated readings will serve as our inspiration.
