I hate auditions. Always have. So, I am going to create a workshop that I would have killed for when I first started my acting career: We will have fun. That’s the secret.
When you figure out how to have fun in an audition room, you can turn a stressful experience into a good or even great one. No one does their best work when dealing with anxiety or imposter syndrome. Together, we will uncover your unique personality and explore how to let that shine through, because really, directors just want to see who you really are.
This doesn’t mean that we won’t be rigourous in the work, but we’ll find a way to approach auditioning with joy, comfort, and groundedness.
This workshop will be designed in a way where all levels of experience are welcome. Please come with at least 2 monologues you feel passionate about. Style, gender or age of character do not matter. At some point in the workshop, we will be working one on one, within the group.
We will look at how to:
- choose audition material
- break down and analyse text
- apply for auditions
- be confident, stay grounded and manage anxiety
- present yourself in the room
- perform a piece and
- HAVE FUN!

A thirty+ year veteran of the stage and audio waves, Julie started writing for the theatre fifteen years ago out of a determination to see her own community’s stories on stage. As an actor, she has appeared in theatres across the country, big and small, garnering multiple nominations and awards. As a creator, her works include Mixie and the Halfbreeds, about mixed identity in multiple universes, created with Adrienne Wong; the award-winning The Tashme Project: The Living Archives, a verbatim play about the Japanese Canadian internment experience told through the childhood memories of community elders, created with Matt Miwa- with whom she shares the company, Tashme Productions; and Mizushōbai (The Water Trade) about Kiyoko Tanaka Goto, a real-life Japanese picture-bride turned ‘underground’ business woman in 1930’s British Columbia.
Julie makes a daily practice of striving towards joy through intergenerational healing and finding strength in community in both her creative and personal life. She is a proud Sansei (third-generation Japanese Canadian), taiko player, community leader/connector and plant lover, living, working and playing in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang (Montréal).
