Class Description
A class to develop your solo show idea into a play and work on its performance components. This 8-week course is designed for new and emerging playwrights ready to get started on their plays (or finish one) so they can jump-start their careers in theatre. This class culminates in a sharing of 5-10 minute excerpts of their pieces.
Here are some of the things you will be doing and learning how to do:
- Analyze 2-3 solo plays
- Generating material with writing prompts
- Learning playwriting structure to discover story and how to shape your play
- Finding your story through characters, props and costumes
- Discovering the heart of your solo show
- Workshopping and re-writing
- Performing your solo play
- Self-producing
Artist-Facilitator: Marie Barlizo
Marie Barlizo is a Montreal based playwright, dramaturg, producer and arts educator. She holds a MFA in Creative Writing (TV) from UBC and is the first BIPOC to graduate from the National Theatre School’s Playwriting Program. She is an instructor and playwriting mentor at NTS and dramaturg for Teesri Duniya Theatre’s Fireworks Play Development Program, recipient of the 2022 Bernard Amyot Teaching Award at National Theatre School and winner of the 2022 Jovette Marchessault award for Playwriting.
