Play description

Jane Eyre explores a brilliant young woman’s rise to her own potential and the trials by fire that shape her views on love and loyalty. The play takes a sharp, witty and modern feminist dive into Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece in its romantic original setting.

Jane Eyre was commissioned by The Citadel Theatre, Edmonton, AB. Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director; Chantell Ghosh, Executive Director.

Jane Eyre is produced by permission of the Playwright and Marquis Literary (Colin Rivers).

Director's Word

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is epic, to say the least. Erin Shields’ adaptation is wonderfully challenging—demanding fast-paced dialogue, instant shifts in time and place, and a careful balance to ensure the audience follows Jane’s sweeping journey. But these students rose to meet that challenge with incredible artistry. They worked as a true ensemble, leaping at every opportunity to make the production flow like a beautifully cohesive painting. Their dedication, creativity, and collaboration have been nothing short of inspiring. I am so proud of them and the work we have done together.

At the heart of our storytelling is Jane’s love for beauty and the joy and peace she finds in her own artistry. So much of Jane Eyre is about beauty—who is allowed to be seen as beautiful and what it means to be worthy of love. Jane’s fate is shaped by how others perceive her: an awkward, unattractive orphan as a child, not conventionally beautiful enough to be desired by a man as she matures. And yet, Jane’s true beauty is irrepressible. It burns within her, and she sends it out into the world through her extraordinary art. That fire in her—the beauty she creates—became the inspiration for how we tell her story. The retelling of her life is made up of the brushstrokes of her experience, layer upon layer of passion, longing, and resilience.
