Class Description

Fresh Pages: Generating New Writing for Your Play

Staring at a blank page can be daunting. Fresh Pages: Generating New Writing for Your Play offers an opportunity to discover new and exciting ways of creating material for your play, while giving you the tools to shape that material into a strong script.

Whether you’re just beginning a new play or deep in revisions, this class provides the structure, inspiration, and support you need to move your work forward. Designed for writers of all levels of experience and backgrounds, the class will be especially valuable if you have a script-in-progress, a rough outline, or a compelling seed of an idea you’re ready to grow.

Throughout the class, you will:

  • Generate new pages each week using inspiring prompts that focus on different elements of your play, offering multiple strategies for creative discovery within your script.

  • Explore and apply the fundamentals of playwriting — plot, character, dialogue, structure — to strengthen your script.

  • Share an excerpt of your work with the group and practise skills for giving and receiving constructive, respectful feedback (excellent preparation for future workshops of your play!).

  • Gain practical advice on next steps for your play: submitting to theatres and festivals, connecting with mentorship programs, building relationships in the industry, and applying for grants.

By the end of the class, you will have a wealth of new pages, fresh insights into your play, and a toolkit of strategies and resources to continue its development. Each week we’ll gather as creators in conversation, sharing, exploring, and expanding the possibilities of our writing together.

Sessions will include group discussions and in-class writing time, with the expectation that you will also dedicate time outside of class to writing.

Artist-Facilitator: Adjani Poirier

Adjani Poirier (she/they) is a queer Black theatre artist of mixed Haitian and French/English European ancestry, currently living and creating in her hometown of Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal.

They are interested in creating work that explores both the beauty and the ugliness of the human experience. They are drawn to stories that reveal the complexity of navigating a world where systemic inequalities oppress, yet love and connection still seep through the cracks — strong and fierce — giving us life. Their writing often uses magical realism to explore ideas of home, queer desire, and the ways in which the subconscious shapes our relationships to each other and to our physical surroundings.

Adjani is the current Assistant Artistic Director at Black Theatre Workshop. They previously worked as the Literary/Dramaturgical Associate Artist at Imago Theatre, where they also served as a mentor with the company’s youth mentorship program ARTISTA.

They hold a DEC in Acting from Dawson College, a BFA in Theatre and Development with a minor in Sexuality Studies from Concordia University, and are a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, where they studied playwriting.

Adjani curated the 2021 edition of QueerCab with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and served on the selection jury for Slut Island, a feminist music and art festival. They have also worked with Bread and Puppet Theater in Vermont, where they learned puppeteering, papier-mâché, and stilt-walking.

Alongside their theatre practice, Adjani is dedicated to grassroots community work and has had the privilege of collaborating with Yukon Girls Rock Camp, AIDS Community Care Montreal, and Get to the Pointe!, an arts-based sexual health initiative for marginalized youth in Montreal. They also co-hosted and produced the community radio show Sounds Dramatic, spotlighting queer and racialized artists and theatre makers.

Their plays include: Scorpio Moon (Imago Theatre), Sinkhole (or six ways to disappear) (Infinitheatre), Celebrity Dogs (Boca del Lupo’s “Plays2Perform @ Home”), and flight of fancy, hold me close (New Words Festival).
