Class Description
Whether you are starting your career, returning after a hiatus, or simply curious about acting and have never auditioned before, this class is designed with different levels of experience in mind.
Starting with at least one monologue prepared for the first class, we will explore how to further refine and elevate your audition piece through individual coaching (within the group). On your feet, we will work on script analysis, acting choices, imagery, stakes, relationships, and intention.
Classes 1 and 2 will serve as an introduction to the participants and their chosen monologues. Classes 3 to 9 will focus on reading, performing, and receiving coaching on your pieces. Each class, 50% of participants will work in rotation—meaning you will have the opportunity to work on your monologue three to four times during the course. Class 10 will be an open class with invited guests.
In addition, half of every class will be devoted to discussion and exploration of:
-
How to choose a monologue and find/read a play;
-
Managing nerves and stage fright;
-
What to expect and how to behave in an audition room;
-
Preparation techniques (warm-up, memorization, body awareness);
-
Cold reading;
-
How to get an audition;
-
How to become familiar with the local and Canadian theatre scene.
By the end of the workshop, you will have at least one polished monologue ready to pull out of your pocket. Working on a second monologue will depend on the time you choose to dedicate to the first. Please remain open to changing your piece, as we will be discussing how to select a monologue that truly fits you.
As a teacher, I am friendly and approachable, while also encouraging rigour within the fun.

Artist-facilitator: Julie Tamiko Manning
A thirty+ year veteran of the stage and audio waves, Julie started writing for the theatre fifteen years ago out of a determination to see her own community’s stories on stage. As an actor, she has appeared in theatres across the country, big and small, garnering multiple nominations and awards. As a creator, her works include Mixie and the Halfbreeds, about mixed identity in multiple universes, created with Adrienne Wong; the award-winning The Tashme Project: The Living Archives, a verbatim play about the Japanese Canadian internment experience told through the childhood memories of community elders, created with Matt Miwa- with whom she shares the company, Tashme Productions; and Mizushōbai (The Water Trade) about Kiyoko Tanaka Goto, a real-life Japanese picture-bride turned ‘underground’ business woman in 1930’s British Columbia.
Julie makes a daily practice of striving towards joy through intergenerational healing and finding strength in community in both her creative and personal life. She is a proud Sansei (third-generation Japanese Canadian), taiko player, community leader/connector and plant lover, living, working and playing in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang (Montréal).
