Director's Note
Welcome to A Midsummer Night’s Dream!
From the start, I’ve maintained that this is a play about love.
Lysander says: “the course of true love never did run smooth.”
I love the idea of love being a course, not a fixed point. It’s a path, it changes, it moves, and it’s sometimes rough.
In sonnet 116, Shakespeare says love is “the star to every wand’ring bark” – a guiding light, something to aim at but maybe never actually attainable.
Making theatre is an act of love, and I’m so grateful to everyone involved for going on the journey; for aiming for the stars, even when the way seemed decidedly un-smooth.
And now, dear audience, it’s your turn to join us on this wild adventure…. So Welcome!

Thank you to the team behind the scenes. To Rinchen, Katie, Dani, Julia, Nez, Teddy – thank you for your creativity, your adaptability, your dedicated work, and commitment to the process. Thank you Jill for a truly delightful collaboration, and to Shea and Cameron for helping make the quick-change magic happen! And thank you to the team supporting the students along the way with your own magic: Sue, Nicole, Andrea, Stephane, Rebecca, Jonathan, Quincy, Audrey, Audrey-Anne, Crystal, Lauren and Julian.
Performing Shakespeare requires an actor to be grounded but not stuck, open but not floppy, prepared and responsive, wildly playful and profoundly serious. To Ainslee, Nikola, Scotia, Rainbow, Brendan, Sophie, Laurel, Kritika and Owen – it’s been a delight to rediscover this play with you, to witness your openness, determined growth, commitment to the work and to each other. Enjoy this part of the journey!
