Kathryn Smith is a queer and trans theatre director, designer, and creator who has worked across Canada for the last 10 years. Their focus lies in collective creation, queer stories, and community development.
Since 2022, Kathryn (or KP) has been the Artistic Director of Verb Theatre – a Calgary based independent theatre company that focuses on producing ‘tomorrows theatre today’. While at Verb, Kathryn has done co-productions with companies from Calgary, Toronto, and Edmonton. They have produced award winning high quality productions, and have been programming work about, for, and with the LGBTQ2S+ community. Recently, Verb has implemented the Queer and Trans Playwrights Club that Verb will be hosting during the 2024/2025 season where four queer writers will work with mentors and build community with other queer artists throughout the year.
Outside of Verb, Kathryn has spent their career working on new work development, producing and directing independently, and staying active in the prairie theatre scene. They have worked as a director and designer throughout Canada, and are also an award winning singer songwriter under the name KP Smith
Kathryn uses their multi-faceted background to work with the queer community in Calgary through projects like Camp fYrefly, The Coming Out Monologues, and Youth Riot. Kathryn has also worked on a number of projects for social change and inclusion, working with community members directly (Safe Site: The Supervised Consumption Site Monologues and The Bottle Picker Monologues).
