                                                            About the Play
Everybody, a play about a person ordered to account for their lives, is based on the 15th century Everyman, a play which features a similar journey. When the original was written, if one was able to survive childhood, life expectancy was about 50 years. Infant mortality was high. People generally died at home. Death was a part of life.
When we began discussing the possibility of staging Everybody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, COVID-19 was not a consideration. We were not hearing daily death counts and having regular conversations about how to keep one another safe. Now, Jacobs-Jenkins’ piece plays out in a new context. The central character, Everybody, is reckoning with all aspects of their lives. We’re doing the same thing – from our relationships to politics, to our beliefs – with almost every aspect of how we live our lives. And we’re not alone. Everybody is doing it.
This play highlights that any story about death is likely focused on life. Here we are, in a moment of reckoning, at the precipice of a new reality, some of it in our control, some of it not. What will we make of our time here?
