Gabriel Tsampalieros - Teaching Artist, Set and Costume Design

An architect and set and costume designer by training, visual artist Gabriel Tsampaliero has been designing sets, costumes, lighting and video for stage and media arts since 1998, for which he has won a number of prizes at various award galas.
Along with well-established artists from the theatre scene, he has collaborated on the modernization of classical repertory as well as on the creation of new plays by contemporary authors for productions staged at the main Francophone institutions in Quebec, Ontario and Belgium, including Espace GO, Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui, National Arts Centre French Theatre, Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario and Le Rideau in Brussels. Renowned for his minimalist and bold treatment of the dramatic space as well as for the importance he places on lighting, Gabriel Tsampalieros’ set and costume designs are the result of an ideation process that seeks to combine structure, organic nature and simplicity in an unusual way so as to create powerful spatial metaphors that are at once intangible and mesmerizing and entirely subjected to light.
Beyond the theatre, his varied skills have led him to express his art in a number of related disciplines, such as opera, dance, exhibit design, television and cinema, where his work has been noticed at various international festivals. He has also been active in education since 2007 and has developed, among other things, an expertise in architectural history. He has created a range of courses, workshops and presentations that he has led at various renowned institutions, such as the National Theatre School of Canada, UQAM’s École supérieure de théâtre, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture and, more recently, the theatre company Les 2 Mondes. The presentation he gave at the latter was the focus of a detailed article published in the JEU theatre magazine.

Wishing to channel his acquired experience towards new professional horizons, Gabriel joined the Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group in 2017 as an assistant set and costume designer for future permanent shows in Dubai and at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. In 2019, he completed his first feature-length fiction film, which he also produced. Carried out in parallel, these two new artistic adventures would prove to be a turning point in his career, enabling him to extend the reach of his creativity globally and thereby affirm his ability to design and bring major projects to life.
