About the project<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Even though I had great examples at home that went so far against this nuclear heteronormative ideal<\/em><\/span>, I still felt pressure to uphold that shit. If I didn\u2019t, then I had to fully confront my own queerness-<\/em> and that\u2019s a lot to handle at 13.<\/em>“<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“The first time I remember coming out as a <\/em><\/span>queerspawn<\/em>, I was shocked that my kindergarten class didn\u2019t know the detailed intricacies about artificial insemination.<\/em>“<\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I\u2019ve attended a lot of boring lesbian potlucks in my time. Eaten a lot of quinoa.<\/em>“<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou never stop coming out. One time, I came out to an Uber driver and he literally swerved onto the sidewalk.<\/em>\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This project received financial support from the National Theatre School of Canada via the Art Apart program<\/a>, an emergency fund for emerging artists who are affected by physical distancing due to coronavirus (COVID-19).<\/em><\/p>\n

About the artist<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kira<\/strong> is a queer, feminist, theatre artist whose work is focused on LGBTQ+ representation. She is a PhD student studying Theatre & Performance Studies at York University <\/span><\/span><\/span>where her research focuses on queer performance autoethnography. S<\/span><\/span>he is an alumna of the inaugural writing unit, <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Women\u2019s Room<\/span><\/span><\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/span>by <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pat the Dog Theatre Creation. Her show <\/span><\/span>Queer Spawn<\/span><\/span><\/em> has been showcased on stages throughout Kitchener\/Waterloo, Toronto and Hamilton. Recent writing credits include: <\/span><\/span>Under<\/em> <\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>HamilTEN<\/span><\/span>), <\/span><\/span>Lay to Rest<\/span><\/span><\/em> (staged reading, Pat the Dog Theatre Creation), and <\/span><\/span>Futch<\/span><\/span>\/ <\/span><\/span>Bemme<\/span><\/span><\/em> (OutFest2018 & Gay Play Day Festival). She is also the co-author, with her mom Susan Meyers<\/strong>, of <\/span><\/span><\/span>the chapter <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Queer Baby Project: Excerpts from the Experiment<\/em> published in <\/span><\/span>Swelling with Pride: Queer Conception and Adoption Stories<\/span><\/span><\/em>. Select acting credits include: <\/span><\/span><\/span>Dariya<\/span><\/span> <\/span>in <\/span><\/span>There are No Gays <\/span><\/span>Here<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/em>(Page1), Alex in <\/span><\/span>Futch<\/span><\/span>\/<\/span><\/span>Bemme<\/span><\/span><\/em> (<\/span><\/span>OutFest<\/span><\/span> <\/span>2018 & Gay Play Day Festival), <\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Juliet<\/em> in <\/span><\/span>Romeo and Juliet; Occupy Verona<\/span><\/span> (Theatre <\/span><\/span><\/span>Erindale<\/span><\/span>).
