About the project<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Edmonton Poems<\/em> is a series of texts reflecting <\/span>on places, people, and experiences from <\/span>the author\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>hometown<\/span>. They\u2019re a way of processing the wandering, rootless feeling <\/span>he<\/span> had over the last few years by trying to reconnect to where <\/span>he<\/span> come<\/span>s<\/span> from. <\/span>A<\/span> complicated letter to a complicated place in a complicated time.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

David will be posting one text<\/span> every day for seven days on the Instagram account for Strange Victory Performance (@<\/span>strange_victory<\/span><\/a><\/span>), the new company <\/span>he<\/span> formed with <\/span>Tori Morrison<\/span><\/strong>. At the end of the week, <\/span>he will<\/span> read the whole series on Instagram Live. The Edmonton Poems<\/em> uses <\/span>the<\/span> Instagram account as a platform for an online performance that speaks to a <\/span>hometown<\/span> <\/span>he<\/span> can\u2019t get to right now. It\u2019s a Strange Victory project for these strange times.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Dad’s yodeling upstairs again. Dad’s
<\/em>dressed like a doctor. Dad’s pouring whiskey
<\/em>in his coffee and sitting on a drum stool
<\/em>all day in the garage. Dad’s got an old
<\/em>radio. Dad’s doing just fine. You’re
<\/em>a wheel now. You’re part horse.
<\/em>Lace falls from the sky. Nets fall
<\/em>from the sky. Used instruments bought
<\/em>on Craigslist for ungrateful preteens
<\/em>fall from the sky. You’re adding
<\/em>pins to the map so it don’t fall
<\/em>down. Glass-blowing is on Netflix.
<\/em>Irony is harmful but irony is good.
<\/em>Dad’s selling antique jewelry. Dad’s
<\/em>calling his fucked-up friend. Right
<\/em>now it’s three hours from now. You’re
<\/em>sloughing things off. You’re holding on tight.
<\/em>You take your friend to the water
<\/em>and you pass your friend a bottle
<\/em>and you’re flying out tomorrow
<\/em>and you sit there in the dark. <\/em><\/p>\n

    David Gagnon Walker<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/span>is a playwright, dramaturg, and performer working across Canada. He was born and raised in Edmonton and currently lives in Halifax. His projects explore the spaces between text-based theatre, literature, and other modes of contemporary performance. His play <\/span><\/span>Premium Content<\/span><\/span><\/em> was presented at the 2020 High Performance Rodeo in a production by Major Matt Mason Collective. <\/span><\/span>Softly, now<\/span><\/span><\/em>, his collaboration with Anthony Black<\/strong> and Christian Barry<\/strong> of 2b theatre company, was scheduled to premiere in March 2020 before being postponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. <\/span><\/span>This Is the Story for the Child Ruled by Fear<\/span><\/span><\/em>, his participatory solo show directed by Christian Barry<\/strong> and Judy <\/strong><\/span><\/span>Wensel<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, is programmed to premiere at Vancouver\u2019s <\/span><\/span>rEvolver<\/span><\/span> Festival. David is the 2019-2020 RBC Emerging Artist-in-Residence with 2b theatre company, and a graduate of the Playwriting program <\/a>at the National Theatre School of Canada.
