About the project<\/strong><\/p>\n

Drawing inspiration from <\/span>Franz Kafka<\/span><\/strong>\u2019s novella <\/span>Metamorphosis<\/span><\/em>,<\/span> <\/span>Alison Helmer<\/span><\/strong> designs a costume for a drag performance by a fellow NTS student, with the additional challenge brought by physical distancing which limits the materials and resources she has. Alison shows us the process of costume designing in 3 parts: <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

    This project<\/span> mirrors the current societal themes of isolation and <\/span>Kafkaesque <\/span>madness<\/span> which ensues. <\/span>Alison comments on <\/span>the<\/span> relationship <\/span>between<\/span> gender exploration and identity<\/span> by exploring the concept of s<\/span>hapeshifting partnered <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>that <\/span>of drag performance<\/span> and by using<\/span> imagery of insects and nature<\/span>,<\/span> and the beauty and oddities within them.<\/span><\/p>\n

      This project received financial support from the National Theatre School of Canada via the Art Apart program<\/a>, an emergency fund for emerging artists who are affected by physical distancing due to coronavirus (COVID-19).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

      About the artist<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Alison Helmer<\/span><\/strong> is a multidisciplinary artist who has been deeply and continuously influenced by her studies and experience working on the east coast of Newfoundland. She began her studies in the Technical Theatre Production program at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University. While there, she worked for two seasons as Head of Design with Beyond the Overpass Theatre Company, and as the costume and set designer for Rising Tide Theatre\u2019s 2019 season<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

      Currently i<\/span>n her final year of the<\/span> Set and Costume Design<\/span> program at the National Theatre School of Canada, she has been able to explore restoration costumes with a contemporary twist on <\/span>Nell Gwynn<\/span><\/em> directed by <\/span>Krista Jackson<\/span><\/strong>, as well as work on the costumes for NTS\u2019s 2019 creation project with directors <\/span>Zack Fraser<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Ariana <\/span><\/strong>Bardesono<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
