Although he never says the words \u201cresidential schools\u201d in the monologue, it is his fearful description, detail, and comparison to fictional evils that make the violent essence of these colonial histories so vivid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In <\/span><em><span data-contrast=\"none\">S\u00eakisiw<\/span><\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <strong>Ashleigh <\/strong><\/span><strong>Giffen<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong> <\/strong>depicts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a young Indigenous character who is intrinsically present in his communities&#8217; ways of knowing. From vague stories of his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mooshums<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> childhood, to the maternal warnings given by his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kookum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Bobbi grapples with the understanding of what it means to create fictional horror for entertainment, when so many of his people have lived through the realities of their own colonial horror.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ol><\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>This project received financial support from the National Theatre School of Canada via the <a href=\"\/\/ent-nts.ca\/en\/art-apart-artistic-works\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Art Apart program<\/a>, an emergency fund for emerging artists who are affected by physical distancing due to coronavirus (COVID-19).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the artist<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ent-nts.ca\/app\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Ashley-Giffen_vignette.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" data-w=\"318\" data-h=\"262\" data-r=\"1.2137404580153\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ashleigh Giffen<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">22 year old<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Oji-Cree\/Pueblo\/Icelandic artist. She was raised in Squamish territory but now lives in Syilx Territory. She is a multi disciplinary artist exploring dream state, realm travel, and fragmented histories through lenses of critical indigeneity and discouraging genre. Her first play, <\/span><em><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kamwatan<\/span><\/em><em><span data-contrast=\"none\"> <\/span><\/em><em><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nipe<\/span><\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (quiet water) held its first reading at the Arts Club theatre company, and she is currently in the process of a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">full-length<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> commission at the Arts Club writing its duo project. She was the 2nd place winner of the 2019 Canadian Arts and Stories writing contest, as well as the 2019 Writing in the Margins poetry winner in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Briarpatch<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> magazine. She also is the 2nd place winner in the 2020 Room magazine poetry contest.
