About the class

In Theatre II, participants will engage in a deeper exploration of the skills needed to perform honestly and with conviction on stage. This course will use various theatre exercises, scene work, and improvisation to explore actor warm-ups, character development, script analysis, and performance.

In a playful environment, with commitment and full engagement, participants will develop and challenge their inner artist, so they can bring their best foot forward as performers – and in their everyday lives.

The course will end with an open class to share some of what has been learned over the 10 weeks.

Objectives

  • To further develop basic skills of acting: awareness of breath, voice, & movement; trusting one’s impulses; making bold choices; and working as an ensemble.
  • To develop personal techniques in order to perform with honesty and conviction.
  • To engage with the inner artist by instilling confidence and encouraging agency.
  • To develop a respect and rigour for the craft.

Teaching artist: A.J Richardson

An actor, director, dramaturg, and dad, Andrew Joseph Richardson (he/him) is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada (Acting, 2008). Originally from amiskwaciy-wâskahikan to settler families from different regions of the ‘old’ world, A.J. lived in Tkaronto, where he was a co-founding member of Shakespeare in the Ruff, before relocating to Tiotià:ke during the pandemic.

For 8 summers with Ruff, A.J. lead emerging artists in the Guerrilla Ruff Squad though outdoor theatre workshops, play readings, improvs, and performances. More recently, he has brought his talents in acting and dramaturgy to Repercussion Theatre.

A.J. is fascinated by the duality of Canadian identity, and the multiplicity of perspectives which can inform our individual artistry. He believes that we can strengthen our natural stage presence by considering these facets of ourselves in relation to the characters we play, springboarding into authentic spontaneity in our acting.
