The National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) is looking for a dynamic and highly motivated Music Teacher/ Music Theatre Director to join the English Section for the school year of 2020-2021. NTS is a unique hybrid of theatre school and a theatre company. Music is vital to the School’s theatre training in Acting and is often available in the School’s other programs.

Moreover, the Head of Music is responsible for teaching and maintaining of the School’s musical education. They report to the English section’s Artistic Director and work in tandem with the other teachers and program directors to help foster a positive and supportive learning environment for the students.  They provide musical direction and arrangements for shows, classes and performances, as required, and are involved in the School’s Community Engagement programs.

Because the School’s teachers are also practicing artists, there is the opportunity to be involved in projects outside the School as mutually agreed up by the Artistic director.

Job Description

The Challenges

As a member of our team, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide support through a variety of tasks related to the various aspects of School’s day-to-day activities;

Responsibilities
  • Teach core curriculum for Acting 1, 2, and 3, in scheduled weekly classes;
  • Provide pedagogical support for project teachers and directors;
  • Be available to assist the Acting Program, i.e. notes sessions, interviews, meetings, auditions and callbacks, as mutually agreed upon with the Program Director;
  • Participate in pedagogical planning and programming, provide support in production selection, and collaborate with the Program Director to oversee English section’s curriculum, development and progress, as needed;
  • Participate in student evaluations including but not limited to weekly teacher meetings, closing notes sessions on each project and end-of-term student evaluations, both written and oral;
  • Arrange the music for and conduct the NTS Community Choir;
  • In the event that the School undertakes a musical theatre production, the Head of Music is expected to provide musical direction in mutual agreement with the Artistic Director of the English section;
  • Provide musical direction for class projects or in-class performances as requested or mutually agreed upon with other teachers;
  • Conduct a small holiday concert in December and a small spring concert in April;
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to discuss student progress;
  • Potentially teach two 3-hour classes per year group on Score Reading for Stage Managers, as mutually agreed upon with the Head of the Production Design and Technical Arts (PDTA) Department;
  • Potentially teach, provide music direction or coaching to the Playwriting students, as mutually agreed upon with the Head of the Playwriting Department;
  • Contribute, as needed, to relevant administrative activities for the English section including but not limited to scheduling, follow-up with students’ well-being, liaising with Heads of Voice and Movement, Program Directors, and all Acting teachers and directors.
Profile
  • University degree and two to three years experience in managing public and private funding files in a similar position, with proof of success;
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Music, Musical Theatre, Music Education, or equivalent;
  • Professional experience is an asset and would be considered an equivalency to teaching experience;
  • Teaching experience in a post-secondary institution;
  • Piano proficiency (Grade 9 RCM or higher);
  • Experience as a music director/conductor for professional theatre;
  • Experience as an accompanist for professional theatre;
  • Choir Director experience;
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills;
  • Excellent communication and listening skills;
  • Effective organizational and planning skills;
  • Flexible and adaptable;
  • This job is for the School’s English section. Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory.

This role is a full-time position during the school year, which is between mid-August and mid-June with a regular class schedule as well as involvement in productions which follow a professional schedule inspired by CAEA guidelines.
